Stairway

Sometimes it's hard for me to post a new picture because the one I posted yesterday was so much better than the one I'm posting today. This is one of those times. I really liked yesterday's hosta picture, and this is just one that I took because it was 10:00 and I hadn't taken a picture yet. But it is another part of the house to cross off the list.

Hosta

This is number two (see previous post).

Cain Park

I woke up this morning and realized with a gasp that not only did I not post a picture yesterday, but I didn't even take any pictures yesterday. Not a single one! I even went on a walk with my camera and didn't shoot anything.
So, I kind of made up for it today by doing two rounds of picture-taking. I'm going to pick one picture from each batch to post today. Here's number one.

From the Roof

I took this picture from the roof of the ICA where Mark works.

Game Night

Again today I only took a few pictures at the last minute, but this time I got one that I like. The lighting was pretty low and the original picture looked too yellow, but a quick fix on Microsoft Picture Manager helped that out quite a bit.

Dusty Keyboard

I hardly took any pictures today, and none of them were really worth posting. But here's one anyway. If I let it go once it will be too easy to let it go another time. My goal is still to try for one picture post a day for a year. I think this is day 55.

A Different Point of View

I took this picture while standing on our back porch looking down at Mark as he stood on the driveway. When we got home later tonight and looked at the pictures I couldn't stop laughing at this one. It's so funny how distorted the perspective is.

Glass and Apple

Last week I bought a dinky tripod for $4 at a thrift store (I haggled him down from $7). Now I can take pictures without flash and with slow shutter speeds that aren't too blurry. I took this same shot both with the flash and without--this is the 'without' shot. They were very different. I like the way the light is coming from behind the glass in this picture. In the other one the light was shining on the glass, rather than through it--that made it kind of flat and lifeless.

In the Attic

I can cross one more room off my list.

On the Road Again

Saturday, May 19, 2007

This is the only picture I took on Saturday on our way home from Hilton Head. Overall I was a bit disappointed with the pictures I took on my trip. There was always something going on that I thought would make good pictures, but in the end most of my pictures were snapshots rather than photographs. I got kind of tired of taking pictures by the end of the week. I should have just taken one hour each day to go find something to take pictures of, but instead I felt like I had to take my camera everywhere.

Forecast: Smoky

Thursday, May 17, 2007

The view across the wetlands at this park on Hilton Head Island usually shows big houses on the opposite shore, but not on this day. Smoke from the forest fires in Florida had been blown up the coast, making everything hazy and gray, not to mention the campfire smell that permeated everything.

Gwen

My niece Gwen was showing me a shell she had found, but I thought this look on her face was more picture-worthy.

I took this picture when we stopped at a gas station on the way from the DC area to Hilton Head.

Battlefield

Saturday, May 12, 2007

When I was a kid my dad took me and my brother and sisters to every Civil War battlefield there is. Back then we complained quite a bit (my sister even threatens her own two children with a visit to a battlefield if they misbehave). I'm now old enough to appreciate the history that happened on this land.

On the Road

Friday, May 11, 2007

Mark and I left for our vacation yesterday. I took a couple of pictures from the car--not the best way to get good pictures. But it gives you a sense of how we spent our day. Eight hours from Cleveland to northern VA. We're visiting my dad, then leaving tomorrow for Hilton Head to spend the week with Mark's family. I'm still planning to take pictures every day and choose one from each day to post, but I might not have internet access every day.

Thursday Girl

It's hard to resist taking my camera along on Thursdays. It's been fun learning how to shoot pictures of a baby.

I snuck some pictures of Mark today while he was doing some yardwork. Isn't he cute?

Beads

At 10:20 tonight I realized I hadn't taken a single picture today. So I pulled out the camera and took this picture of a necklace that was lying on my dresser. I guess this could count as my bedroom picture, since I haven't posted one from there yet.

Tulips and Birdhouse

Mark and I went to Stan Hywet today. I took dozens of pictures, so it was hard to pick one to post. But the harder thing was to see all of the great pictures that I almost got. I have some potentially interesting and original shots, but there are little details that I didn't pay attention to in the moment that ruin the photograph.

This one could have ended up like one of those, and didn't--but not because I was paying attention to the details in the moment. It wasn't until we were home looking at the pictures on the computer, and after I had looked at this one several times, that Mark pointed out to me that you could see the birdhouse in this picture. A "happy accident".

Living Room

In my quest to photograph something from each room in my house I have done: kitchen, dining room, bathroom, office and now living room. Seeing things from new angles makes for interesting pictures, so I laid down on the floor to get this shot. I like the lines and angles made by the coffee table, window and ceiling molding and frames, and then the round globe for contrast.

Young Musicians

I went to a middle school band concert tonight (the son and daughter of some friends of mine were performing). I thought this was an interesting pair.

My Knitters

Technically, this isn't a very good photograph--the background is kind of washed out, it's kind of blurry and I cut someone's head off. But look how much fun they're having!
